It adds the only antacid, sodium bicarbonate which it manufactures in the lining of the stomach.  The cover cells in the stomach pulls sodium chlorided, alkaline water and carbon dioxide from the blood to make sodium bicarbonate to buffer the acids in the Coke or Pepsi.  The chemistry is as follows:  NaCl + H2O + CO2 <=> NaHCO3 + HCL.  You can see that for every alkaline molecule of sodium bicarbonate created in response to the acids in Coke and Pepsi and equal amount of the acid molecule hydrochloric acid is created.  This may cause even more acids and a vicious cycle leading to stomach indigestion, acid refux, GERD, stomach ulcers and stomach cancer.</li><li>The blood, now low on sodium and high in acidity, replenishes its supply from the bones and muscles.
