Our foundation is dedicated to raising active participants in the world; to support, serve and educate those affected by Lupus, directly or indirectly; and to promote healthy living by providing resources, information and education to those with or without illness.<br /><br />Our first project[1] told a personal and intimate story that documented the impact Lupus had in my life. The poetic short film called FLARE, referring to the flares one experiences with Lupus, shows my daily struggle with constant pain, chronic fatigue, paralysis and several near-death experiences. It elaborates on the emotional landscape that comes with illness, the insecurities, and the questions. I wanted to expose the misunderstanding from society as many illnesses today do not have physical manifestations on appearance. Lupus is one of those illnesses. I faced devastating frustration with hospitals, doctors, lab tests, drugs; the monthly, weekly and even daily IV’s, and the long rides in the desperate search for the “right” therapy or “cure” for Lupus following traditional medical care! It was NOT working and I was getting sicker!!!!!<br /><br />I am 35 years old. I was diagnosed with Lupus in 2003 and in 2007, during my worst flare, Lupus attacked my heart, lungs, eyes, skin and even my nervous system. My life was at risk because all drugs recommended failed to work and in some cases heightened the symptoms. I was eventually put on chemotherapy, a trial treatment for Lupus.<br /><br />I always knew what most patients feel and yet are very insecure to voice, we are merely suppressing our symptoms with the drugs and not treating the root of the illness.<br /><br />I had to take my life back. After 12 years of pain, frustration, and suffering, I was finally ready to take responsibility for my own health: I decided to boost my immune system by changing my diet and lifestyle. I spent two weeks at the pH Miracle Living Center in Areta, Italy learning all about the role of food in our lives and how the way we eat and how what we eat affects our health. I spent three months with Dr. Robert O Young, at the pH Miracle Liiving Center in Valley Center, California, detoxing, alkalizing and restoring my body to its natural healthy state. These three months changed my life physically and spiritually. Not only did it bring me health freedom, it also brought me back to my own heart. I am aware of the person I am today without the stigma of Lupus, the drugs, the doctors, the lab tests and hospitals. It changed my body, my mind, and soul. I am finally experiencing a significant relief. Among 1,208 cases evaluated, ultrasounds also successfully detected about 57 percent more harmful breast cancers compared to mammograms.<br /><br />Dr. Constance Lehman, M.D., Ph.D., Director of Radiology at SCCA and her colleagues observed that, particularly among women aged 30 to 39, ultrasounds are a safer and more effective alternative to mammograms as a breast cancer screening tool. Based on her and her team's findings, it now appears prudent to switch gears and perhaps ditch mammography altogether.<br /><br />"In women under 40, ultrasound is better at evaluating breast lumps compared to mammography," said Lehman about the findings, which were published recently in the American Journal of Roentgenology. Though Lehman still recommends mammograms for women over age 40, her study's findings illustrate that they are an unnecessary risk.<br />Earlier study finds ultrasounds far more effective than mammograms<br />A New Zealand study published in the American Journal of Surgery back in 2004 clearly illustrates this point, having found that ultrasound is "significantly better than mammography for detecting invasive breast cancer," having demonstrated a 92 percent success rate. Combining both mammography and ultrasound, on the other hand, only increased breast cancer detection by nine percent, which may represent statistical insignificance.<br /><br />Ultrasounds also work better than mammograms at detecting cancer tumors in denser breast tissue. A Connecticut women, for example, was diagnosed earlier this year with stage 3C breast cancer after getting an ultrasound following a mammogram. The mammogram falsely indicated no tumors, while the ultrasound told the real story.<br />.<br />Mammograms cause cancer; ultrasounds do not<br />.<br />Steering clear of mammography becomes a whole lot easier, even in spite of intense social pressure, once women realize that the technology actually causes breast cancer. This is just a quick follow up to my previous post about the <a href="http://dailyacquisition.blogspot.com/2013/03/leuchtturm1917-pocket-notebook.html" target="_blank">Leuchtturm1917 Pocket Notebook</a>. After writing that post, I purchased and used other "good" fountain pen friendly paper, including a Rhodia Webnotebook. I'm no paper expert, but I've found that the Leuchtturm1917 paper works better for me than Rhodia and Clairefontaine paper. Don't get me wrong, Rhodia and Clairefontaine paper products are great, and I like using them. However . . . Rhodia and Clairefontaine products are expensive, and the paper used in those products can be too smooth and impenetrable for some of my fountain pens. As a result, some pens skip when writing on Rhodia/Clairefontaine paper. In addition, ink takes forever to dry on those papers.<br /><br />In contrast, the paper found in Leuchtturm1917 notebooks seems to hit a sweet spot such that the paper is absorptive enough to prevent skipping, while also being smooth enough to accommodate pleasant fountain pen writing. OK, I admit that these characteristics may also result in slightly more ink spread, feathering, and show-through than other premium paper. That said, the combination of all those minor downsides pales in comparison to the occasional skipping that I experience with the competing paper. Seriously, I can't stand it when my flowing words of written wisdom get abruptly interrupted by Mr. Rhodia saying "let me stop you right HERE so that you can appreciate my glass-like surface, which limits ink distribution to within a submicron range."<br /><br />Some folks may retort with comments such as "you're doing it wrong" or "you need to send your pens to a nibmeister and have them all tuned up" or "have you tried using ink X" or "you suck and I hate you" or "I'll bet you live in a dry climate, and that you have hard water, and that you don't eat enough fresh fruit" - fair enough. I suppose I'm just glad that the Leuchtturm1917 paper allows me to write with all of my fountain pens in a consistent and expected manner. Just saying.
