Dropbox has offered free space amounts ranging from 25-50GB as part of promotional deals with Samsung and HTC, Box has offered 50GB of free storage with file-size limitations before, and just this week Microsoft upped the storage space for its SkyDrive Pro offering from 7GB to 25GB.</b><br /><br />But over in China they are thinking really big. Chinese tech giants Baidu and Qihoo 360 are currently courting users with 1TB of free space and Chinese tech company Tencent has upped the game, offering a jaw-dropping 10TB worth of free storage.<br /><br />How it works: sign up for a Tencent QQ account and download the latest version of the Tencent Cloud (Weiyun) mobile app. Click on the big blue button on <a href="http://www.weiyun.com/act/10t.html?WYTAG=weiyun.portal.index" target="_blank">Weiyun’s promo site</a> and you will immediately receive 1TB worth of free space first. As the amount of space you use increases (and in turn lowering the amount of space you are left with), Tencent will top up your storage space automatically, up to a maximum of 10TB.</div>

Xiaomi | High End Smartphones at Rock Bottom Prices

Macworld reported that Xiaomi’s shipments had already surpassed Apple’s there.<br /><br />Bin Lin is committed to selling high quality products at no profit margins. How do they do that? By selling services such as backup, security and customized versions of its software. They also offer accessories to their phones including different color backplates and even batteries .<br /><br />To lower costs, the company cut out middlemen and distributors, selling directly through its Web site. The marketing was not just innovative for China, the company said, but allowed Xiaomi to sell smartphones for just half the price of the iPhone or Samsung Galaxy phones.<br /><br />Xiaomi also outsources designs and features online from its so-called Mi-Fans, and releases a new version of the operating system every Friday, to add new features and keep the Mi-Fans excited.<br /><br />The Xiaomi Phone 2S, its most recent flagship, has top end specs competitive with the Samsung Galaxy S4 or HTC One. It sells for a bargain price of ¥2,299 (roughly $370)—roughly half of what the Samsung Galaxy S4 is priced at.</div><br /><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="480" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/QXM7QmgM7yc?rel=0" width="853"></iframe><br /><br /><div id="posttext" style="text-align: justify;">Xiaomi phones, which run a customized version of Android that looks more like Apple’s iOS, sold $2 billion in handsets in China last year and it expects its revenue to double this year.<br /><br />The company caters to young, college-educated people who want a smartphone but cannot quite afford one.<br /><br /><span style="color: black; display: inline; float: left; font-family: museo-1,museo-2,helvetica; font-size: 32px; font-weight: 300; letter-spacing: -0.04em; line-height: 1em; margin: 30px 30px 30px -125px ! important; text-align: right; width: 295px;">Xiaomi sold 100,000 phones online in 90 seconds</span>Xiaomi recently introduced a lower-cost model, known as “Red Rice,” that sells for 799 Chinese yuan (or $130, including the country’s value-added tax). The company sold 100,000 of the devices in 90 seconds when it offered Red Rice online.<br /><br />Bin says that the company routinely sells out batches of 300,000 phones at a time through direct sales to consumers on its website. Recognizing this high demand, counterfeiters and pirates have swooped in to capitalize on it and sell lower-quality products under the auspices of the Xiaomi brand, tarnishing its reputation and providing poor experiences to customers. Lin says that it is working on increasing production to meet demand and working with the Chinese government to crack down on the piracy issue.<br /><br />While Xiaomi has had great success in China selling unsubsidized phones directly to consumers via its website, western markets are still largely driven by in-store sales and on-contract, subsidized devices. <br /><br />Xiaomi recently branched out into Hong Kong and Taiwan where the smartphone climate is similar to the West’s subsidy-dominated model. This may be a testing model before moving into the US and Europe.<br /><br />Earlier this week, Xiaomi hired Hugo Barra, a top Android executive and VP at Google.</div>

NASA Engineer Says He Has a Way to Move Faster Than the Speed of Light

His proposed design, a re-imagining of an Alcubierre Drive, may eventually result in an engine that can transport a spacecraft to the nearest star in a matter of weeks—and all without violating Einstein’s law of relativity—nothing with mass can accelerate to light speed.</b><br /><br />The idea came to White while he was considering an equation formulated by Mexican physicist Miguel Alcubierre. In his 1994 paper titled, “The Warp Drive: Hyper-Fast Travel Within General Relativity,” Alcubierre suggested a mechanism by which space-time could be “warped” both in front of and behind a spacecraft.<br /><br />Alcubierre’s notion takes advantage of a quirk in the cosmological code that allows for the expansion and contraction of space-time, and could allow for hyper-fast travel between interstellar destinations. Essentially, the empty space behind a starship would be made to expand rapidly, pushing the craft in a forward direction—passengers would perceive it as movement despite the complete lack of acceleration.<br /><br />(Think of this bubble like a moving sidewalk: It carries you faster than you can walk, but your leg muscles still dictate how fast you can walk on the rubber surface. A “warp bubble” would then be generated that moves space-time around the object, effectively repositioning it—the end result being faster-than-light travel without the spheroid (or spacecraft) having to move with respect to its local frame of reference.<br /><br /><blockquote class="tr_bq"><span style="font-size: large;">“Remember, nothing locally exceeds the speed of light, but space can expand and contract at any speed. However, space-time is really stiff, so to create the expansion and contraction effect in a useful manner in order for us to reach interstellar destinations in reasonable time periods would require a lot of energy.”</span> ~Harold White</blockquote><br />Early assessments published in the ensuing scientific literature suggested horrific amounts of energy—basically equal to the mass-energy of the planet Jupiter (what is 1.9 × 1027 kilograms or 317 Earth masses). As a result, the idea was brushed aside as being far too impractical.<br /><br />The key, says White, may be in altering the geometry of the warp drive itself.<br /><br />White has redesigned the theoretical warp-traveling spacecraft—and in particular a ring around it that is key to its propulsion system—in a way that he believes will greatly reduce the energy requirements.<br /><br />White says, “I suddenly realized that if you made the thickness of the negative vacuum energy ring larger—like shifting from a belt shape to a donut shape—and oscillate the warp bubble, you can greatly reduce the energy required—perhaps making the idea plausible.” White had adjusted the shape of Alcubierre’s ring which surrounded the spheroid from something that was a flat halo to something that was thicker and curvier.<br /><br />White’s new new design could significantly reduce the amount of exotic matter required. And in fact, White says that the warp drive could be powered by a mass that’s even less than that of the Voyager 1 spacecraft.<br /><br />That’s a significant change in calculations to say the least. Fountain Pen! Sailor Professional Gear (Matte Black)

Several months ago I wrote a three-part saga that eventually led to the acquisition of the most buttery smooth, awesome-laden writing instrument in my collection: the Sailor Professional Gear (matte black body with silver trim; 21 karat gold, two-tone rhodium plated nib; medium size). First of all, the Japanese are really into the presentation aspects of their products. It really made for a dramatic unboxing experience, and the tissue paper was effective at wiping away the tears of joy. It doesn't look too aristocratic, and it doesn't look cheesy or old-fashioned to my eyes. The thick silver band is inscribed with "Sailor Japan Founded 1911" (it's a subtle detail that is easy to miss). The clip and barrel rings are also silver colored. The body and cap are made of resin, and I like the matte black finish because it reminds me of a rat rod and it does a good job at hiding fingerprints. The emblem is gold/brass colored, which goes against the silver trimmed theme of the pen. The bi-colored nib is really nice to look at, and it writes as good as it looks. The gold highlights and design details on the nib are very impressive, too. The nib says "H-M" on it, and I assume that stands for "Hello Mate" or "Happy Monday" (LOL, some experts think it means "Hard Medium"). It is not a very heavy pen (it weighs about 23.3 grams with the cap on and the ink cartridge almost full), yet it feels sturdy and solid in the hand. There is a thin o-ring seal between the body and the nib section to provide a stable seal after filling the converter or replacing the cartridge. There is also some type of compliant seal inside of the cap; I can feel something compressing when I twist the cap onto the body. I assume this keeps the nib from drying out.<br /><br />The Pro Gear may be a little short for some people to use unposted. Although I usually post the cap, it's totally comfortable and easy to use unposted. Here's a nice picture of the pen uncapped, with absolutely no scale or object for use as a sizing reference. The nib is noticeably smoother than most if not all of my other fountain pens, the medium size is nearly perfect for me, it always starts right up, and it hasn't skipped or stopped writing on me yet. Maybe I got lucky, but this pen worked perfectly out of the box, and I wouldn't change anything about the nib.<br /><br />I'll end this post with a writing sample on Rhodia paper. It was written using the black ink cartridge that came with the pen (Sailor's black ink is a nice, deep, and uniform black). I'm currently using the converter (by the way, the converter is pretty handsome too . . . the silver trim on the converter blends well with the silver accents on the pen) filled with Diamine Eclipse ink. In 2008, an ancient fishing village was swept off the face of the earth and a forest of skyscrapers were planted in its place. Scheduled for completion in 2019, Yujiapu isn’t just a copy of Manhattan’s FiDi, but is set to be even larger than the original. At 3.86 sq km in area, it is to become the “largest single financial center on the world.” So not only is this a colossal knock off, it’s a colossal development in its own right.</div>

One online satirist suggested it should reopen as a museum of fakes.</b><br /><br />The museum has 12 vast exhibition halls and cost 60 million yuan (about $9.8 million) to build, opening its doors in 2010. China is currently in the midst of an unprecedented museum boom with nearly 400 new museums opening in 2011 alone, according to government figures. Unfortunately, it’s hard to fill that many museums, and China also has a prolific faking industry.<br /><br />Some Jizhou residents have accused the museum’s curator, local party chief Wang Zongquan, of misappropriating the funds and covering it up with cheap counterfeits.<br /><br />“Most of the historic relics are fake, but the real ones are in Wang’s home,” resident Liu Xin-liang told Global Times.<br /><br />Shao Baoming, the museum’s deputy curator, told Shanghai Daily that half of the artifacts in the museum were real. The walls of his office in the heart of the Chinese capital were adorned with photographs of him next to retired generals and government officials. He was undone only when his relationship with his young mistress was exposed on the Internet and the party disowned him.<br /><br /><blockquote class="tr_bq"><span style="font-size: large;">“It is very difficult for ordinary people to identify swindlers, because officials are estranged from people. The sense of distance between officials and the public is what swindlers live on.”</span> ~Yi Shenghua, a lawyer who met Li in 2011</blockquote><br />Qiao Xinsheng, a professor at Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, said that for centuries, China has been an excessively centralized state, where emperors would dispatch envoys to far-flung corners of their lands to exercise their power.<br /><br />“This provides fertile soil for political swindlers. Sector by sector the State is being cut out of the equation and power is being returned to the individual.”</span> ~The Dread Pirate Roberts</blockquote><br /><span style="font-size: x-large;">A</span><b>n entrepreneur as professionally careful as the Dread Pirate Roberts doesn’t trust instant messaging services. Forget phones or Skype. At one point during our eight-month preinterview courtship, I offer to meet him at an undisclosed location outside the United States. “Meeting in person is out of the question,” he says. “I don’t meet in person even with my closest advisors.”</b><br /><br />All my communications with Roberts are routed exclusively through the messaging system and forums of the website he owns and manages, the Silk Road. Accessing the site requires running the anonymity software Tor, which encrypts Web traffic and triple-bounces it among thousands of computers around the world. Like a long, blindfolded ride in the back of some guerrilla leader’s van, Tor is designed to prevent me–and anyone else–from tracking the location of Silk Road’s servers or the Dread Pirate Roberts himself. “The highest levels of government are hunting me,” says Roberts. “I can’t take any chances.”<br /><br />If Roberts is paranoid, it’s because very powerful people really are out to get him. In the last two and a half years Silk Road has grown into the Web’s busiest bazaar for heroin, methamphetamines, crack, cocaine, LSD, ecstasy and enough strains of marijuana to put an Amsterdam coffee shop to shame. <br /><br />Anyone can download and run Tor, exchange some dollars or euros for the digital currency Bitcoin and go shopping on Silk Road for drugs that are vacuum-sealed and discreetly mailed via the U.S. Postal Service, right under the federal government’s nose.<br /><br />He sees himself not just as an enabler of street-corner pushers but also as a radical libertarian revolutionary carving out an anarchic digital space beyond the reach of the taxation and regulatory powers of the state–Julian Assange with a hypodermic needle. <br /><br /><blockquote class="tr_bq"><span style="font-size: large;">“We can’t stay silent forever. We have an important message, and the time is ripe for the world to hear it. What we’re doing isn’t about scoring drugs or ‘sticking it to the man.’ It’s about standing up for our rights as human beings and refusing to submit when we’ve done no wrong.”</span></blockquote><br />The Dread Pirate Roberts isn’t shy about naming Silk Road’s active ingredient: The cryptographic digital currency known as Bitcoin. “We’ve won the State’s War on Drugs because of Bitcoin,” he writes.<br /><br />Mix up your coins in one of many available laundering services–Silk Road runs one automatically for all transactions on the site–and it becomes very difficult to follow the money. Even the FBI, according to one of the bureau’s leaked internal reports, worries that Bitcoin’s complexity and lack of a central authority “present distinct challenges” for tracking criminal funds. The result is a currency as convenient as PayPal and theoretically as anonymous as cash.<br /><br />“Silk Road doesn’t really sell drugs. It sells insurance and financial products,” says Carnegie Mellon computer engineering professor Nicolas Christin. “It doesn’t really matter whether you’re selling T-shirts or cocaine.
