Protein Bars Made From Cricket Flour

So naturally they went with cricket flour which is slow roasted and milled from crickets. The result is a bar that is high in protein, low in sugar, incredibly nutritionally dense, and packed with omega 3 fatty acids, iron and calcium. </b><br /><br />Crickets are exceptionally nutritious. They are high in protein (69% by dry weight), low in fat and contain all the essential amino acids. They are also high in micronutrients: crickets have more iron than beef and almost as much calcium as milk.<br /><br />Sewitz and Lewis say their bars taste great and their chef has overseen three Michelin Star restaurants and was the Head Chef of R&D at The Fat Duck in England, one of the best restaurants in the world.<br /><br />Sewitz says there’s some evidence that insects don’t feel pain–at least as we typically conceive of it—so if that’s your reason for being a vegetarian, then this makes sense too. </div>

Hollywood’s Plastic Surgeons Find Gold in Dubai

<div id="posttext" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: large;"><b><a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/why-hollywoods-plastic-surgeons-decamped-590207?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+thr%2Fnews+%28The+Hollywood+Reporter+-+Top+Stories%29" target="blank">The Hollywood Reporter</a></b></span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-large;">A</span> <b>reality TV show started the explosion of plastic surgery performed by Hollywood doctors in Dubai. <i>Dr. 90210</i> began titillating American viewers in 2004 with its look at the physical transformations of Beverly Hills’ beauty-obsessed denizens through breast implants, reductions, face-lifts, rhinoplasties, liposuction and whitened smiles. Its tagline: </b><br /><br /><blockquote class="tr_bq"><span style="font-size: large;">“If you weren’t born with it, buy it.”</span></blockquote><br /><i>Dr. 90210</i>’s stars have become hugely in-demand surgeons. “Anyone who has any kind of media exposure here is considered an A-list celebrity, not just a reality TV asshole,” says Jason Diamond, Dr. 90210’s former facial expert. He also is the ringleader of a 90210 plastic-surgeon posse that is part of a lucrative partnership with the American British Surgical & Medical Centre, a facility that brings U.S. and U.K. doctors to the Middle East, located on Abu Bakr Al Siddique Road in Dubai’s Deira district.<br /><br />After being approached by the ABSAMC, Diamond, who specializes in noses and face-lifts, brought in other former 90210 docs including Kevin Sands, the Kardashians’ family dentist who also has created winning grins for Charlie Sheen, Miley Cyrus, Kanye West, Emma Stone, Robert Downey Jr. and Britney Spears.<br /><br />“The whole royal family comes to see me in my Beverly Hills office — half my patients are from the Middle East, Kuwait and Qatar — so it was very natural for me to go there,” says Sands. “It took a while to get our licenses and insurance. You don’t want to mess around over there if you want to come back with both your hands,“ he jokes. “For four days, I’m prepping patients’ teeth and taking impressions. Then I fly home, have the veneers made in Beverly Hills and fly back and finish them. That’s what they're paying for — the best.”<br /><br />Another 90210 star Diamond enlisted is David Matlock, the show’s liposuction, body sculpting and vaginal rejuvenation expert. (Matlock’s loudest celebrity shout-out notoriously has come from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ Brandi Glanville, who devoted an entire chapter in her best-selling book, <i>Drinking & Tweeting and Other Brandi Blunders</i>, to his down-under skills at making her naughty bits look 17 again.) Of his entrée to Dubai, Matlock says: “It was amazing. When I first arrived, I had instant name recognition and an instant practice. They love you here; they talk to you about the show. That's a huge part of the success of this project.”<br /><a name='more'></a><br />To assist Dubai patients with booking appointments, the 90210 doctors’ in-country dates are announced on the ABSAMC website. “Hollywood's top Smile Makeover Dentist available in Dubai. Book now!” announced one tweet from the center’s feed.<br /><br />The doctors’ schedules fill fast, compelling them to work from 7 a.m. to midnight for four or five straight days. “We don't even have time for dinner,” says Diamond. “We work and sleep.” But they do have to make time for patients to pray during procedures and appointments. Muslims perform the soul-cleansing Salah prayer five specific times daily. Says Diamond, “Religion is a big part of their lives.”<br /><br />What has surprised the doctors is that while Dubai is a sophisticated international city with a large representation of English-speaking residents and European expats, many devout Arab women — including wives and daughters from uber-wealthy and royal families — wear hijabs and veils in public. But “while they come in with traditional garments, it’s amazing how quickly they throw them off and how many Rolexes, Guccis and Fendis are underneath,” says Matlock.<br /><br />The doctors also marvel at the mysterious lack of conflict for Muslim women undergoing purely cosmetic procedures that change the creations of Allah and therefore are haram, or against Islamic law. “Despite that, a lot of these women are very competitive about their looks, much more so than Beverly Hills wives,” says Diamond. “A woman’s job in Islam is to be beautiful for her man. There’s no women’s lib. They can't work, so they stay home and try to look pretty. A lot of the women have to compete for their husbands with the other, younger wives.”<br /><br />Matlock adds that he often hears: “ ‘Oh, my husband’s taken his fourth wife.’ They want to keep themselves together, and that’s very good for our business.” He also is surprised by how many Dubai patients want their vaginas rejuvenated: “More and more women are requesting it. European women? Yes, of course — I knew they would want it. But I never thought it would be a possibility for Arab women. It’s only 10 percent of my procedures in Dubai, but it’s building as word spreads among the wives.”<br /><br />All of the 90210 doctors are pinching themselves about the overnight success of their Dubai practices. “I go there, and in four days I can knock out 20 cases,” says Matlock. “That’s what I would do in two weeks in Beverly Hills." Says Sands, simply, “It’s a gold mine” — only one that requires commitments like 14- to 16-hour flights and travel expenses including, for Sands, bringing his assistants and equipment. "The jet lag is exhausting,” he says of his monthly trip. Other emerging markets hungry for the Beverly Hills aesthetic include Africa, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong and India, specifically Mumbai. “The new surgical centers are determined where there is a demand and people can afford it. It’s economics,” explains Diamond. And while cultural differences are sure to crop up, the jet-setting plastic surgeon insists that “everyone on the planet aspires to looking Hollywood, whether it’s Kim Kardashian’s nose, Angelina Jolie’s mouth, neck and jaw line, Halle Berry’s cheeks, Jennifer Aniston’s eyes or Megan Fox’s nose. <div id="posttext" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: large;"><b><a href="http://andrewhinman.com/portfolio/02-locomotive-ranch-trailer.php?i=5" target="blank">Andrew Hinman Architecture</a></b></span> <br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-large;">W</span><b>hen a South Texas ranch owner relocated one of his cherished possessions, a vintage streamlined aluminum house (not travel) trailer, to the family’s favorite fishing/swimming hole overlooking the Nueces River he needed to protect the house from flash-flooding from the river. </b><br /><br />The solution is a steel-framed, metal-roofed cradle that lifts the trailer above the flood plain. The cradle is anchored by a concrete blockhouse containing utilities, storage and bathroom topped by a screened sleeping loft. Decks and hot tub add additional comfort. Dual tanks provide for rainwater harvesting. Engineers say it's possible to purify sewage water until it’s cleaner than much of what residents drink today. 59Fifty Baseball Caps? Yes.

59Fifty refers to the flagship baseball cap model by the company New Era. 59Fifty caps are old school in that they are fitted according to skull size. New Era has been making caps since 1920, and the 59Fifty model has been around for almost 60 years. The 59Fifty is the official on-field baseball cap worn by Major League Baseball players (it is also the official sideline cap worn by NFL players).<br /><br />Wait, there is a backstory here. First, I am almost positive that I owned a 59Fifty cap many years ago without actually realizing it at the time. I recall owning a fitted cap back in the day - size 7 1/8 - but don't remember the design, team, or style. I assume that it was a New Era 59Fifty, which has been the most popular fitted cap for ages.<br /><br />More backstory: I used to have a collection of NBA team caps, but they were not made by New Era. They were adjustable caps (aka "snapback" caps), and I had one for every team. I rarely wore those hats, and eventually got rid of them. So, caps and I have a little bit of history . . . but I've never really been interested in 59Fifty caps <i>per se</i>. Until recently. Seriously, there is a lot to learn about these caps! This is fascinating stuff, and could be the beginning of a new acquisition disorder around these parts.<br /><br />OK, so the frontstory goes like this: I was at the mall recently and saw a kiosk selling a bunch of caps. At the time, I was looking for a Lakers cap (even though the NBA season is over and the Lakers suck these days). I wasn't looking for a 59Fifty cap in particular, I just wanted anything that fit. He wanted a Detroit Tigers cap and we found one that fit him fairly well. In fact, don't even look at it." So I told my son to keep the stickers on his cap until he was certain that it fit well and he wanted it as a keeper. At this point, the sight of my kid rockin' his new cap with the stickers on them made me wonder why many people (young and old) wear baseball caps without removing the tags and stickers. I was also curious about the "flat bill" phenomena (see golfer Rickie Fowler) that has really caught on.<br /><br />It didn't take much online research for me to realize that there is a baseball cap subculture (which includes baseball fans, hat collectors, 59Fifty collectors, etc.). I found a <a href="http://neweracaptalk.com/forum/" target="_blank">New Era fan forum</a>, and several baseball cap blogs such as <a href="http://www.strictlyfitteds.com/" target="_blank">this one</a>. I now know that there are certain techniques and protocols related to breaking in a cap, shrinking a cap, stretching a cap that is too snug, altering the shape of the crown, restoring the shape of a cap, brushing the silky smooth fabric of a cap, storing caps, etc. I've also seen videos, forum posts, and articles related to Sticker Syndrome and, to be honest, it all seems quite silly to me. He removed it (along with all of the other stickers) after about a week. As the above picture shows, an authentic 59Fifty cap includes a lot of branding and labels on the inside; consequently, stickers are not really necessary as evidence of authenticity. Personally, I don't really care if a person wants to keep one or more stickers or tags on his/her cap. It's a free country, and it's not my cap, so why should it matter?<br /><br />It matters because it's funny, that's why. <div id="posttext" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: x-large;">M</span><b>aybe the New York Fed is trying to tell modern bankers something by reminding them of history.</b><br /><br />This article appeared on Fed’s website.<br /><span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span><span style="font-size: large;"><b><a href="http://libertystreeteconomics.newyorkfed.org/2013/04/historical-echoes-central-bank-and-paper-money-innovator-given-death-sentence-for-his-efforts.html" target="blank">Federal Reserve Bank of New York</a></b></span><br /><br />In 1668, Johan Palmstruch, the head of Stockholm Banco, the precursor to the oldest central bank still operating today—the Swedish Riksbank—was charged and sentenced to death.<br /><br />At the time, Sweden was one of Europe’s great powers, an empire that stretched across Scandinavia into today’s Baltic nations and parts of Germany, Poland and Russia. The country’s principal currency was enormous copper plates, called dalers. The Swedish King deputized Palmstruch to modernize the country’s finances. <br /><br />Palmstruch issued Europe’s first paper currency (China’s first version had appeared in 1024) which would be backed by the dalers held in the bank. As the dalers piled up, Palmstruch started making loans. But King Gustav died and Sweden’s ruling council decided to strike new copper plates that were worth less than the old ones.<br /><br />Swedes began lining up at the Banco to claim their old dalers, whose value had suddenly gone up.<br /><br />But Palmstruch had lent out too much. His solution: Start printing out even more paper that anyone could redeem at will. But the amount of paper money in the market began to vastly outpace the Banco’s actual daler holdings and the bank failed.<br /><br />Palmstruch was sentenced to death although he was later pardoned. </div>

When he logged on to his account at PayPal to confirm the amount, he discovered that his balance was zero. <br /><br />Reynolds said he’s been a PayPal customer for about 10 years and uses it to buy and sell items on eBay, including vintage car parts. He said he usually spends no more than $100 a month using PayPal.<br /><br />“This is obviously an error and we appreciate that Mr. Reynolds understood this was the case,” PayPal said in a statement. No word on why PayPal assumed this was obviously an error. Maybe he really did have guadrillions in his account.<br /><br />The next notice Mr Reynolds received from the company said he needed to renew the credit card attached to his account.<br /><br />“So, even though I have 90 quadrillion dollars, they still don’t trust me,” he said. </div>

Each movement of individuals in the artwork is felt by everyone.</b> <br /><br />The artist describes the floating space as an oscillating network of relationships, neural pathways, resonances, and synchronous communication—a new digital geography, one that is experienced in physical terms.<br /><br />The gigantic installation work has been assembled in Dusseldorf’s <a href="http://www.kunstsammlung.de/en/home.html" target="_blank">Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen</a>. At a height of more than 20 meters above the piazza of the K21 Ständehaus, Saraceno has suspended a net construction within which visitors can move, apparently weightlessly. This contemporary safety net, which covers altogether 2500 m², spreads itself out across three levels below the massive glass cupola of the K21. The levels are held apart from one another by a series of “spheres,” airfilled PVC balls measuring up to 8.5 meters in diameter.<br /></div>

Nomadic: (1) of, relating to, or characteristic of nomads; (2) roaming about from place to place aimlessly, frequently, or without a fixed pattern of movement; (3) a Japanese (of course) company that makes pen cases, bags, backpacks, pencil cases, and more pen cases.<br /><br />I've already written about the <a href="http://dailyacquisition.blogspot.com/2012/12/nomadic-pe-06-pencil-case.html" target="_blank">Nomadic PE-06</a> case that I got for my son. The PE-06 is a nice case, although it's rather small. My daughter has a much larger collection of pens and pencils, she NEEDED a new case to hold all of them, and she had me at "I want . . ." Of course, one thing led to another, which led to the Nomadic PE-09 Pencil Case. Anyway, the PE-09 is huge - it has a large main compartment that is accessible via the main zipper on the top, a Velcro-affixed flap with a zippered pocket (shown in the picture above), and additional pouches and interior mesh pockets. The main compartment is basically a large interior volume with a little mesh pocket that is suitable for an eraser, a piece of candy, or a lucky bottlecap. I estimate that at least 30 standard sized pens/pencils could fit in the main pocket. I don't like the noisy Velcro, but I can live with it. Another feature (or flaw) that I don't particularly like is the way that the main compartment remains accessible even though the zipper is closed. It's hard to describe: the primary zipper seals the top of the compartment, but leaves gaps on the two sides. These gaps are large enough to allow pens and pencils to slide out of the compartment, which may occur during extreme stationery competitions or simply as a result of tossing the case into a backpack. I admit that the likelihood of actually losing something is rather low, but still. One that is different? One that gives you a new experience? A new way to use your iPhone?</b><br /><br />Under the hood, well... You know these unremarkable old cars that look slow? And then the driver hits the gas pedal and you're not sure which one would be faster: That car or a Lambo! “Project Thunderstorm” was like that. It didn’t play some random thunderstorm sounds as most people would expect. It played a thunderstorm recorded in stereoscopic 3D, using a state-of-the-art microphone that had ears and captured the sound exactly the way humans hear — with interaural time and level differences.<br /><br />Stereoscopic 3D audio for headphones is like 3D video for 3D glasses. You have two ears for the same reason that you have two eyes. So you can see and hear in 3D.<br /><br />The lightning flashes were the icing on the cake, and boost the immersive effect even further by acting as another cue to the brain that the thunderstorm is real. How do you define when a lightning flash should occur, and how strong? Since light is a lot faster than sound, it was clear that the flashes had to happen before the thunder. The delay between a lightning flash and the audible thunder sound depends on a lot of factors. Since we had just audio recordings but no video, we had to recreate them on our own, solely based on the audio track. We looked at the energy in the lower frequency spectrum to determine how close and strong a thunder was, and combined that with some imagination to nail each and every lightning flash.<br /><br />Another challenge was repetition. When you listen to the same recording over and over again, your brain begins to identify repetitive patterns. We took some measures to reduce repetition based on psychoacoustic sound evaluation principles. But of course nothing beats length! Therefore, our thunderstorms are up to 26 minutes long and seamlessly looped.<br /><br />In a nutshell, we believe we've crafted a novel relaxation app we can be proud of, and which will put a smile on your face after a stressful day.</div>

If you want to keep things closer to home, a $150 pledge gets you an Earth Scout that will be released into Earth's atmosphere.</b><br /><br />Your Scout is a polyimide disc (a material used for flexible circuit boards, spacesuits and, of particular relevance for this application, high performance solar sails) held taut by a NiTi memory metal hoop that can also double as an antenna. Some 1,000 children aged four to 12 will attend, without notebooks, books or backpacks. Each of them, however, will have his or her own iPad.</b><br /><br />There will be no blackboards, chalk or classrooms, homeroom teachers, formal classes, lesson plans, seating charts, pens, teachers teaching from the front of the room, schedules, parent-teacher meetings, grades, recess bells, fixed school days and school vacations. If a child would rather play on his or her iPad instead of learning, it'll be okay. And the children will choose what they wish to learn based on what they happen to be curious about.<br /><br />The schools will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 on every workday. The children will come and go as they please, as long as they are present during the core period between 10:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The building will only be closed for Christmas and New Year’s. The children's families will be able to go on vacation when they please, and no child will have to be worried about missing class as a result, since classes in the traditional sense will be nonexistent.<br /><br />Only in exceptional cases will a teacher direct classes in groups. In each exercise, the children are corrected the way players are in a computer game. They don’t have to work through entire chapters, as they did in the past. The goal is to enable them to reach the next level in the learning program at their own pace. The teacher’s role is to help them, not as conveyors of knowledge but as learning coaches. “The interaction between the child and the teacher remains the foundation of the lesson,” as Kleinpaste puts it.<br /><br />As such, the school day never really ends. Pupils are welcome to keep working on their iPads at home, on weekends or on vacation. But as much as the program offers freedom and continuity, it also comes with a substantial monitoring component. The iPad keeps teachers and parents constantly informed about what children are doing, what they have learned and how they are progressing. If a math app is neither enjoyable nor successful, the teacher simply orders another one. The supply of educational programs never runs dry in Apple's online app store.<br /><br />Arithmetic, reading skills and text comprehension are the core subjects in the elementary school. Good handwriting has been downgraded to a secondary skill, nice for industrious pupils but not truly relevant.<br /><br />Every six weeks, teachers, children and parents decide together what is to be achieved in the next learning period. To do so, they meet at school or virtually via Skype. The era of the 10-minute parent-teacher meeting once a year is a thing of the past in the Steve Jobs schools.<br /><br />And when they are not working on iPads, the future principal insists, students at Steve Jobs schools will lead the lives of perfectly normal children. Drawing, building things, playing and physical activity are all part of daily life at the schools.<br /><br />“It isn’t as if the children will just be sitting in front of a screen here,” Kleinpaste promises.<br /><br />The initiator of the iPad schools is the well-known Amsterdam public opinion researcher Maurice de Hond, 65, a man with an affinity for digital life. He is proud of the fact that he has known how to program computers since 1965. His daughter Daphne, born in 2009, pointed the way for him.<br /><br />"At home, Daphne learns naturally, according to her own pace, interactively and using multimedia tools,” says de Hond. Why should she feel “like she’s in a museum” when she’s in school, he asks? The classic chalk-and-blackboard teachers, he adds, “are preparing children for a world that no longer exists.”<br /></div>
